We invite proposals for papers treating the conference theme in relation to French and Francophone cultures, history, literatures, music, art history and sciences in the long nineteenth century.
Our 2021 conference theme also invites delegates to consider new and emerging research priorities and practices for how we promote the importance of nineteenth-century French and Francophone studies, for example in the understanding of nineteenth-century echoes in contemporary Francophone cultures, or how nineteenth-century French and Francophone artists, writers, collectors, travellers and other expert practitioners left indelible legacies on their own and other world heritages. Our theme engages with the many intercultural reverberations of the French nineteenth century.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
Inheritance and the disinherited
Legacy and counter-tradition
Memorialisation, historiography and counter-narrative
The invention of tradition
Landmark events and watersheds
Foremothers and women pioneers
New media and their makers
Inventors, innovators and catalysts
Collectables and now unfashionable objects
Iconoclasts
Mentors and patrons
Bicentennial figures of 2021 (Baudelaire, Flaubert, Luminais, Vuitton, Champfleury…)
Forces for social and cultural changeRites and beliefs (medical, scientific, religious)
Alternative lifestyles and forms of expression
Reworkings of the nineteenth century
Proposals for individual papers or panels should be in the form of an abstract (c250 words).
Panels may take a traditional format or be more experimental (eg discussion of pre-circulated papers, short presentations with discussant, round table).
The deadline for proposals is 30 November 2020.
The 2021 edition of the conference will be a hybrid event, featuring two modes of participation:
Virtual participation: recorded presentation (audio or video) or written script to be sent by the 8th March 2021. All papers will be available online two weeks before the event. Panel discussions will then take place online during the conference itself.
Standard participation: in-person presentation, with no requirement to submit paper in advance.You must be a Member of SDN (or SERD) to attend the conference.

Nous vous invitons à nous faire parvenir vos propositions pour des communications traitant le thème du colloque par rapport à la culture française ou francophone, l’histoire et l’histoire de l’art, la littérature et la musique de 1789 à 1914. Le thème de notre conférence 2021 invite également les délégués à examiner les priorités et les nouvelles pratiques de recherche sur la façon dont nous promouvons l’importance des études françaises et francophones du XIXe siècle. Comme étudier, par exemple, les échos, traces et héritages du XIXe siècle et des artistes, écrivains, collectionneurs, voyageurs et autres praticiens français et francophones dans un cadre francophone et/ou transnational.

Les propositions (250 mots environ) pour des interventions individuelles ou des séances entières sont à adresser, en anglais ou en français, avant le 30 novembre 2020.
Les propositions de séances entières peuvent adopter un format traditionnel (communication de 20 minutes avec discussion) ou des formats plus expérimentaux (communications distribuées avant la séance, présentations courtes avec un discutant, table ronde).
L’édition 2021 de la conférence sera un événement hybride avec deux modes de participation:
Participation virtuelle: présentation enregistrée (audio ou vidéo) ou manuscrit à envoyer avant le 8 mars 2021. Toutes les communications seront disponibles en ligne deux semaines avant la conférence. Les discussions auront ensuite lieu en ligne et en direct pendant la conférence elle-même.
Participation standard: présentation en personne, sans obligation de soumettre votre présentation à l’avance.Vous devez être membre de la SDN (ou de la SERD) pour participer à la conférence.
